What to expect during an HVAC Install?

The time an HVAC installation takes may vary from one day to multiple days. This is dependent on factors such as the layout of the system and home. From protecting the property during installation, communicating and debriefing the client about the system, to practicing quality control with follow-ups, a professional HVAC team will take care of the complete installation process. 24 Seven HVAC, an HVAC system installation NY, discusses the steps HVAC technicians usually follow. This can help homeowners understand what to expect during an HVAC installation.
Indoors
1. Remove the old equipment.
- Before installing the new system, the existing air conditioner contains a refrigerant that needs to be removed before a new one can be installed. According to the EPA standards, venting this refrigerant into the atmosphere openly is unlawful. A recovery machine must be used, and a recovery tank to safely and legally remove the refrigerant.
- The sheet metal plenum in the evaporator coil, cased or uncased, will be disconnected before installing a new coil.
- The HVAC team will disconnect the ductwork, control wiring, condensate drain, and the applicable gas and exhaust vent.
2. Install new parts
- New custom ductwork will be installed with an air seal for ductwork connections.
- The team will wire in the high voltage line, replace the toggle switch, change the control wiring, check for gas leaks, rework the exhaust and intake vent flue, and rework the gas line.
- Add the refrigerant and install a new evaporator coil.
3. Check the system
- Leaks will be checked by running nitrogen through the system and conducting a decay test to test vacuum pressure.
Outdoors
- Disconnect and remove the old unit.
- Set and level equipment pad.
- Installation of the unit requires replacing the service disconnect, the load-side high voltage wire, and reworking or replacing the existing copper refrigerant line set and insulation.
Testing
The startup and commissioning (testing) process is done after the system is completely installed and ready to operate. The system is turned on and must run for 15-20 minutes. This will allow the refrigerant to flow through the system and start the air conditioning process.
Once the indoor and outdoor parts of the system have been installed, the HVAC team will inspect the following data:
- The furnace will be fired and gas pressure adjusted to match the factory flow rate spec.
- The temperature rise must be within spec. The team will check the furnace for proper venting and not “back drafting” through the water heater.
- Safety devices will be tested to ensure they are not cutting the system off.
- Static pressure will be checked to see how it relates to airflow setting to make sure it matches spec.
- The throughput will be monitored to ensure the system achieves the expected system capacity.
- Optional add-on accessories such as humidifiers or germicidal UV lights will be inspected for optimum functioning.
Once testing is completed, a professional HVAC team will go over the system’s features and functionalities with the homeowner. Safety, maintenance, warranty, and all special instructions must be given.
